The present invention relates to an apparatus for enlarging and reducing a displayed portion (150) of an image, comprising: a storage means for storing a plurality of image data layers having different scale ratios, each of the plurality of image data layers corresponding to a single map; a display means (3) for displaying a portion (150) of the map; a pointing means (6, 12, 31, 32) for accepting a user's operation; a scale setting means (143) for identifying a desired degree of scale reduction/enlargement of said portion (150) of the map based on said accepted user's operation; and an arithmetic processing means (120, 81) for retrieving one of the image data layers from memory based upon the setting of the scale setting means (143) to provide a corresponding enlargement or reduction in scale of the portion (150) of the map displayed, by providing the retrieved image data layer to the display means (3). The present invention further relates to a digital map display zooming method. |
