A dual condiment grinder (1, fig.1) having two condiment-receiving compartments (4, 5, fig.1) each with a respective rotary grinding mechanism 7a, 7b dispenses a condiment from one or other of the compartments (4, 5, fig .1) depending upon whether a rotary input is turned clockwise or anticlockwise. First and second gear trains 46, 47 transmit torque between the rotary input 3 (e.g. a handle or a reversible motor) and each grinding mechanism 7a, 7b, with a one-way clutch 23, 24 provided in each gear train 46, 47. Rotation of the rotary input 3 in a first direction (e.g. clockwise) rotates the first grinding mechanism 7a, while the second grinding mechanism 7b is stationary, and rotation of the handle 3 in an opposite direction to the first direction (e.g. anti-clockwise) rotates the second grinding mechanism 7b, while the first grinding mechanism 7a is stationary. This allows for only one condiment (e.g. salt or pepper) to be dispensed at a time. However the provision of an auxiliary gear 21 in the second gear train 47 provides a reversing action which allows both grinding mechanisms 7a, 7b to rotate in the same direction. |
