<p>A controller is configured to control access to a data store on a security and communications device connectable to a computer with a housing; a data store; a wide area communications device. The software enables the memory device, such as a USB, to control the wide area communication device to transmit a security message to a remote monitoring system in response to an access event. The security software verifies the presence of the secure memory device and, in the event that the presence of the security and communications device cannot be verified, inhibits operation of the computer. The device may include location sensing means such as GPS or GSM mobile location, which is used to block access to encrypted data on the device when the computer is not at an authorized location. The access event may be powering up or down, reading, writing or deleting data from the device. The security software may poll the device to verify it, with a secure message being sent to a remote monitoring station, with a secure handshake taking place.</p> |
