1,233,023. Gliding parachutes. PIONEER PARACHUTE CO. 29 Aug., 1968 [8 April, 1968], No. 414224/68. Heading B7G. A flexible and self-inflating gliding parachute possesses an aerofoil canopy and comprises an upper, generally rectangular fabric member 2 secured to a lower flexible fabric member 4 via a transversely extending seam 20 and flexible fore and aft extending fabric dividers 36 which define a plurality of adjacent compartments 38 open at their forward facing ends to form a ram air scoop; suspension lines 6 which are attached to cusps on the hems 10 of keels 8 depending vertically from member 4 are of substantially constant length thereby providing even load distribution and producing a transversely arched contour to the canopy during flight. An embodiment is described (Figs. 4-6) wherein the canopy has a substantially triangular plan form and is secured along most of its leading edge leaving only a limited number of centrally situated ram air scoop openings (60, Figs. 4-6). In further embodiments there is situated at the rear of the air scoop, a restricted opening or a one-way valve (78, Figs. 7, 8) comprising a forwardly turned flap serving to ensure air scoop inflation during the initial descent stages. The fabric dividers may be porous or formed by strips of material. |
