<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a projection image display apparatus coping with high luminance, without causing degradation in the optical characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: A half-wave plate with a deviation in viewing angle characteristics is used as a half-wave plate 42 of a polarization converter 7 in an illuminating optical system, and the half-wave plate 42 is arranged to improve conversion efficiency on light in a direction of high intensity among incident light distributed at various angles. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
