A device for converting a continuous electron beam into a pulse-chopped beam, e.g. in an accelerator, comprises a first cavity 3, Fig. 1, in which under the influence of an axial magnetic field B and a transverse high-frequency electric field of frequency f a continuous beam issuing from an electron gun is swept over one or more off-axis apertures 7, Figs. 1 and 2, and a second cavity 10 in which under the influence of similar fields a series of electron bunches 9 produced at the aperture 7 are returned to the axis of the device at outlet aperture 12. The high frequency feed in cavity 10 may be of the same or a slightly different frequency to that in cavity 3. The aperture 7 may be a radial slot and may be in the form of an isosceles triangle with straight or curvilinear sides and with the base of the triangle towards the axis of the device. Alternatively, the partition plate 6 between the cavities may be replaced by a baffle 13, Fig. 5, with a straight edge 14 or with an edge in the form of a V, inverted or not, the straight edge or the point of the V lying in the axis of the device. The baffle arrangement is used when it is desired to achieve a strong coupling between cavities 3 and 10. The aperture or the baffle may be combined with a circular hole in registry with the axis of the device so that with the highfrequency field switched on or off a pulsechopped beam or a continuous beam may be produced. |
