A core 10 for casting a container comprises; a casting surface 16 with the core divided into at least two core segments 12, 14. The casting surface of each segment has a division surface 18 which is spaced apart from the division surface of neighbouring segments by a gap 20 which is spanned by a collapsible member (40; fig 4), such that substantially all of the casting surface is free of the collapsible member. The collapsible member is frangible, may have a waisted section part way along the width which is substantially parallel to the division surface in use, and may be concave, with the apex directed into the gap. The division surfaces may comprise a part (52, 54; fig7) which extends from each core segment so that they overlap when aligned. The collapsible member may comprise a honeycomb structure, or a material which ignites at a temperature below the melting point of the core material. A method for use is also disclosed. |
