A display device and a control method thereof are provided to improve the luminance of an image which is locally bright and detect a pixel region having locally high luminance. A high pixel, to which a gray value more than a set high gray value is applied, is detected(S10). A highlight region is detected(S20). The highlight region comprises the high pixel. The highlight region has a boundary pixel. The boundary pixel is the pixel in which a gray level difference with an adjacent pixel exceeds a reference difference. A gray value more than the gray level of the high pixel is applied to a peripheral area adjacent to the highlight region(S40).
