A portable terminal and a character input method using the same are provided to display a user interface for inputting characters and an outputted character at a near position when the character is inputted by a touch operation by using the portable terminal, thereby confirming the inputted contents and outputted contents at the same time. A character input screen(10b) receives a character by a touch operation of a user. An output screen(10a) displays the inputted character. A display unit(10) displays the character input screen and an output screen and has a touch input function. According to the location of a cursor on the output screen, a control unit(20) changes and displays the location of the character input screen.
