An electronic motor protection relay and a controlling method thereof are provided to display a cause of failure according to an input condition of a push switch and to perform simply an initialization operation of a control unit or a test control operation of a contact. A power supply unit(1) supplies DC power. A current transformer and detection current input unit(2) detects current values of phases of a three-phase AC circuit connected with an electronic motor protection relay. A reference value setting unit(3) inputs set values of reference current and reference time. A ground fault current input unit(5) detects and inputs a ground line current value. A failure cause display unit(6) displays a caused of failure. A push switch input unit(4) inputs a user request according to a switch push time and a switch push number. A relay unit(7) controls a supplying state of power of a motor. A control unit performs control operations to determine the caused of failure, interrupt the supplying state of the power in the state of failure, and display the cause of failure. A data storage unit stores failure cause data. A control and data storage unit(8) processes the user request according to the input condition of the push switch.
