PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display apparatus that can change a dimming speed of a backlight source in accordance with changes in feature quantity of an input video signal based on a difference between times required for light adaptation and dark adaptation. SOLUTION: The video display apparatus includes a liquid crystal panel 3 that displays an input video signal, a backlight source 9 that illuminates the liquid crystal panel 3, an APL detecting part 6 that detects APL of the input video signal, and a control microcomputer 8 that variably controls the variation of emission luminance per predetermined time of the backlight source 9 on the basis of the detected APL. The control microcomputer 8 performs control such that the variation of emission luminance during a change of the APL of the input video signal to a higher level is greater than that during a change to a lower level.
