A method for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) data service signaling negotiation is provided. The method includes the following steps: an initiating softswitch receiving a data service message from an initiating media gateway; modifying the codec format of the initiating media gateway as the redundancy codec format through sending a message with the redundancy codec format to the initiating media gateway; sending the message with the redundancy codec format to the receiving softswitch to command the receiving softswitch to modify the codec format of the receiving media gateway as the redundancy codec format. A system for SIP data service signaling negotiation and a softswitch are also provided. Negotiation for the redundancy codec format used among the gateways which performs the SIP data service transmitting is implemented by using this invention, thereby enhancing the reliability of SIP data service transmissions.
