Electromagnetic radiation absorbing nanoparticles operable for generating excited species when exposed to electromagnetic radiation in the microwave range. According to other embodiments of the present invention, there are provided methods for generating microbubbles near the nanoparticles by interaction of the excited species induced nucleation with ultrasound. According to still other embodiments of the present invention, there are provided methods and apparatus which employ such nanoparticles for treatments based on controlled generation of excited species.
