PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dispersion compensating optical fiber, an optical transmission system and a method for designing a dispersion compensating optical fiber that easily reduce an accumulated dispersion and an accumulated dispersion slope characteristic in an arbitrary wavelength band including the zero dispersion wavelength band of a transmission fiber.

SOLUTION: A positive dispersion optical fiber 15 having a positive chromatic dispersion characteristic and a negative dispersion optical fiber 16 having a negative chromatic dispersion characteristic are cascaded to the transmission fiber 12 to reduce an accumulated dispersion and an accumulated dispersion slope.
