PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of setting a state of a switching element which prevents the breakage of the element upon setting the state thereof. SOLUTION: The method is for setting the state of the switching element including an ion conductive layer, a first electrode whose part in contact with the ion conductive layer contains a material that supplies metal ions to the ion conductive layer, and a second electrode whose part in contact with the ion conductive layer is made of a material that does not supply metal ions. A substrate carrying the switching element is heated to keep the substrate at a given temperature, and a voltage is applied across the first and second elements to cause the switching element to make a state transition.
