PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser element which is variable in laser oscillation wavelength and can have an optical processing element integrated on the same substrate while suppressing optical loss. SOLUTION: A semiconductor laser 1 has a laser cavity formed by a first reflecting means 3 and a second reflecting means 5. The second reflecting means 5 is a chirp type diffraction grating 21 disposed on the semiconductor substrate S in series with a gain waveguide 7 and the first reflecting means 3, and functions as a projection surface for laser light of the semiconductor laser 1. In constitution like this, optical coupling efficiency of two semiconductor optical waveguides disposed across a groove is taken into consideration and an influence of multiple reflection in the groove can be avoided differently from a case wherein the groove functions as a reflecting means for laser light. Consequently, the optical processing element can be integrated on the same semiconductor substrate S while suppressing optical loss. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
