[Class 89 (iii)] A slugging machine which cuts and drives slugs having oppositelybevelled ends comprises a column 1, a table 2, a head 7, a horn 4, and a treadle 18 which operates all the mechanisms of the machine. The slug-forming and driving mechanisms are carried in a casting 12 mounted detachably on the head 7, and are operated by a treadle rod 20 fixed to a crosshead 113. The horn is raised by a rod 22 and a lever 24 with a roller 26. Upward movement of the treadle is limited by a buffer 28. The casting 12 comprises a block 31 formed with a guideway for a plunger 40 to the lower end of which a T - headed driver 47 is secured removably by a plate 43 and screw 46, Fig. 3. The upper end of the plunger is connected adjustably to the crosshead 113 by means of a screwed sleeve 152. The sleeve is operable by a hand-lever 162 to raise or lower the plunger and so vary the degree of countersinking produced by the driver. Wire from a reel 16 is fed to a slot 55 in the block in which are mounted a fixed hold-back pawl 59 and a feed pawl 67 carried by a slide 65. The slide is raised by a spring 72 and is operated, to feed the wire, by a cam member 77 which engages a projection 71 on the slide. The cam member 77 which, if a stop 81 is released, can be turned out of the way to discontinue the wire feed, is actuated by a striking plate 116 on an extension 115 of the crosshead. The striking plate is lubricated by an oil duct 118 and wick 118<SP>1</SP>. The extent of wire feed is controlled by means of a rod 96 which limits the upward movement of the slide 65 under action of the spring 72. The rod is adjustable by means of a toothed eccentric 101 which engages the head 97 of the rod and is operated by a knurled knob 106 with a gauge 108. The wire is fed through a tube 85 to a cutting mechanism comprising a fixed knife 121 and a movable knife 128. The knives have co-acting bevelled surfaces 122, 132 and slots 125, 126, 133, rotation of the knife 128 acting to cut off a bevelpointed slug and transfer it to alignment with the driver. The knife 128 is actuated by a cam surface 43<SP>1</SP> on the plate 43. The horn, Fig. 12, comprises a stem 175 which is held adjustably in a sleeve 172 by a pawl 182 engaging ratchet teeth 178 in the stem. The teeth are rounded to facilitate adjustment of the stem. The sleeve is slidable in a bearing 170 in the table 2 and is held in lowered position by a spring 174 engaging a cup member 173 at the lower end of the sleeve. A bleeder hole 186 provides a dash-pot arrangement when the stem 175 is released from the sleeve. |
