PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly safe water-soluble polymer, which has good hydrophilicity, exhibits excellent adsorbency, dispersibility to chemical fiber and hydrophobic dirt and safety, and for example, is suitably used for a detergent additive. SOLUTION: The water-soluble polymer comprises a polyalkylene glycol chain, a carboxyl group and/or its salt in at least one terminal of the polyalkylene glycol chain, and furthermore, a lactam ring in the molecule.
