PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute image reading of image data having any size without causing overflow of a memory. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus executes an intermittent reading operation where the reading operation is temporarily stopped when it runs out of a space region of a memory and includes: a memory managing means that determines whether the space region larger than a predetermined memory size exists in the memory; and a reading operation control means that controls image reading and interruption thereof of the image reading means on the basis of a reading section of the document having a data size corresponding to an amount of the image data being writable in the space region of the predetermined size of the memory. The reading operation control means makes the image reading means to read the image in a new reading section of the document when the memory managing means determines that a space region larger than the predetermined size exists in the memory, and temporarily stops the image reading operation of the image reading means by image reading completion of the reading section when the memory managing means determines that a space region larger than the predetermined size does not exist in the memory.
