PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder capable of sampling the ink of an ink cartridge which was set prior to the ink cartridge in place at present and utilizing the sampled ink to make examination of the cause of failure (clogging etc.). SOLUTION: The converging parts of an upstream end and a downstream end of two ink sampling paths 21Ba and 21Bb are connected with a passage 7Bb supplying the ink, whereby two ink supplying paths are arranged parallel to the ink passage. A first 22B and a second solenoid-operated selector valve 23B are installed at the converging parts of the ink sampling paths at their upstream and downstream ends, while a solenoid-operated opening and closing valve 24B is installed between the converging parts. When purging is conducted after an ink cartridge is set, the control to open the first and second selector valves is executed for a certain period in the condition that the opening and closing valve is closed, and the ink from the ink cartridge is sampled to the ink sampling path 21Ba or 21Bb.
