PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 2-deoxyribose-5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) chemoenzymatic process for making chiral compounds. SOLUTION: The method comprises a step for reacting acetaldehyde with a N-protected aminoaldehyde substrate selected from the group consisting of 3-phthalimide propionaldehyde, N-formyl-3-aminopropionaldehyde, 3-succinimide-propionaldehyde and N-di-Boc-3-aminopropionamide to form a corresponding lactol on aldol condensation conditions using aldolase as the catalyst, wherein the aldolase is 2-deoxyribose-5-phosphate aldolase (DERA).
