PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a relief type diffraction optical device which can be used in not only infrared, near infrared, and visible light regions but also in the ultraviolet light region and has a high flexibility of design because of a high refractive index and doesn't lose a diffracting function even when recesses of a relief surface are filled with other materials, and can be stably used for high power laser. SOLUTION: The relief type diffraction optical device has the relief surface including projections and recesses which cause light diffraction, and a material of at least a part of an area which light to be diffracted should pass is diamond. It is preferable that an extinction coefficient of the diamond has a value of≤0.021 with respect to light at a wavelength of 520 nm and has a value of≤0.010 with respect to light at a wavelength of 250 nm.
