In a method of forming in succession wrappers of the kind provided with a tear strip extending from one edge of the wrapper, a web 11 of wrapping material to which is attached a web of tear-strip material 12 is fed towards a slitting station at which a pair of slits is formed in the material at positions one on each side of and adjacent the tear-strip web, and then to a wrapper severing station at which the web of wrapping material is cut along lines connecting the longitudinal edges of the web and leading extremities of the slits and along a line connecting the trailing extremities of the slits to complete severing of the wrapper from the web, thus leaving a tongue 33 of wrapping a tear-strip material extending from the wrapper. The webs 11, 12 are fed by rollers 13, 14 through a heater bar 18 to a rotating slitting device 19 incorporating a pair of blades 22 which pass in slots 23 in a support plate 24, and then to a cutting device 26 on a rotatable shaft 27 and having two adjustably mounted knives 28, 29 co-operating with a fixed blade 31, the knife 28 and blade being of greater width than that of the wrapper, and the knife 29 being of a width slightly greater than that of the distance between the slots 21. The severed wrapper lies in the path of an article 34 and is transferred therewith to folding elements by a pusher-bar 36. |
