A plate separating device (3) separates at least a part of the uppermost metal sheet (1a) among stacked metal sheets (1) from the metal sheet (1) positioned just below the uppermost metal sheet. The plate separating device comprises a heating device (5) which concentrically heats the surface layer part of the uppermost metal sheet (1a) on its upper surface side so as to thermally expand the heated upper surface of the metal sheet (1a) relative to the lower surface thereof, thereby generating a camber on the heated portion of the metal sheet (1a).
