<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handheld electronic device and method enabling phonetic text input in a text disambiguation environment. <P>SOLUTION: The method comprises: detecting an ambiguous text input comprising a number actuations of a number of input members, generating a string of language objects that corresponds with at least an initial portion of the linguistic element permutation, and generating a character interpretation that comprises a number of words comprising characters that correspond with the string of language objects; selecting for at least partial output one of the character interpretations on a basis comprising at least one of: its number of words are fewer in quantity than those of at least one other character interpretation, and it has an attributed frequency value greater than that of at least one other character interpretation, the attributed frequency value of a character interpretation being based at least in part upon the frequency objects associated with its number of words. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
