PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can surely match timing to make a transfer member contact/separate between a plurality of image forming parts and also has constitution capable of achieving cost reduction. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with a mechanism used to successively transfer images from an image carrier 1 provided in the plurality of color image forming parts and making a transfer belt 2 contact with/separate from the image carrier. The contact/separation mechanism includes sliding members for contact/separation 300 and 300' divided to image forming parts for one of a plurality of colors and for remaining colors, and is shared among the image forming parts for the remaining colors by rocking the supporting member 22 of a transfer roller 21 arranged in the transfer belt 2 in a direction to make it contact with/separate from the image carrier by cam parts 301 and 301' interlocked with sliding of the sliding members for contact/separation 300 and 300'.
