The invention relates to a method and device for effectively producing therapeutically effective activated forms of oxygen (AFS), wherein the adaptation and polarization effects of the tissues to be treated and the damaging effect of undesired secondary products and the influence of other damaging constituents of the air on the inhaling persons can be reduced or eliminated. The negative high voltage (1) is interrupted several times during the treatment time (t'), wherein, in defined interruptions (3) of the therapeutical negative high voltage (U2), an exponentially and gradually increased negative high voltage (1) with step (1') at a freespace activation electrode (8) having a cord of carbon fibre (9) is cyclically replaced by a zero voltage (U0) and/or with short impulses (5') of a positive high voltage (U3) during the interruption phases (6) of the therapeutical negative high voltage (U2).
