Method for testing the functioning of a temperature sensor used with a drive unit, especially a motor vehicle automatic gear box, whereby a computer unit calculates the heat loss work carried out by the gearbox and its contribution to gear box warming and also considers the effect of any cooling mechanisms on the gearbox. From the two values a calculated temperature is determined. The calculated value is compared with a sensor-measured value to determine if the sensor is operating correctly.
