<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure proper gradation in a face portion of a person in time of gradation correction of an image. <P>SOLUTION: The image 100 is divided into a plurality of block areas 101, a brightness level is decided in each the area, a correction characteristic is set to each pixel of the image 100 based on the decided brightness level of each the block area 101, and brightness of the pixel is individually corrected according to the set correction characteristic. Face recognition is performed in the image 100, the brightness level of the recognized face portion C and an average brightness level of the plurality of block areas 101 (a face block D) overlapping the face portion C are decided, and the brightness level of the block area 101 belonging to the precedingly decided face block D is adjusted based on a comparison result of the brightness levels of both sides. The correction characteristic set to each the pixel is corrected based on an average luminance value of each the pixel in the face portion C.
