A disk drive apparatus and a method for determining the data track format of the disk drive apparatus are provided to control the head switch efficiently by determining the number of data tracks included in each band base on the radial direction of each band. A disk drive apparatus comprises a plurality of recording surfaces which are different in change rate in the radial direction of data track pitch, a plurality of heads corresponding to the recording surfaces, a transfer mechanism which supports the heads and moves the heads at the same time, and a controller controlling the transfer mechanism and the heads. Each of the recording surfaces has a plurality of bands consisting of a plurality of magnetic tracks, where the number of tracks included in each band of the whole or part recording surface is not fixed. The controller performs continuous access in each band and controls a head switch at the end of each band when receiving the command of continuous address from a host.
