Polyfluoro-aralkyl or polyfluoroaralkenyl compounds are prepared by reacting a polyfluoroalkene or polyfluoro-alkyne with a carbocyclic or heterocyclic polyfluoro-aromatic compound in the presence of an alkali-metal fluoride in a polar aprotic reaction medium. The aromatic compound is preferably activated to nucleophilic attack by a nitro-, keto-, cyano-, trifluoromethyl or sulphonic acid group attached to a carbocyclic ring, or by the hetero-atom in a heterocyclic ring. In the examples pentafluoropyridine is reacted with hexafluoropropene or chlorotrifluoroethylene to give perfluoro-(4-isopropyl pyridine) and 1-chloro-1-tetrafluoropyridyl-tetrafluoroethane using tetrahydrothiophen-1,1-dioxide (sulpholane) as the reaction medium and KF or CsF as the alkali-metal fluoride. Penta-fluoro-nitrobenzene and hexafluoropropene are also converted to 1-nitro-4- heptafluoroisopropyl-tetrafluorobenzene.
