In an I.C. engine the air inlet 16, Fig. 2, e.g. of an air cleaner and silencer assembly (14) Fig.1 (not shown), is provided with a valve 18 which is normally spring-biased into its open position. However, when the engine ignition is switched off by switch 32 a solenoid 24 is electrically connected with the engine-driven generator or alternator 30 and is thereby temporarily energized by the decaying electrical energy developed by the altenator as it runs down with the engine. This causes temporary closure of the valve 18 and thereby avoids automatic ignition after the engine has been switched off. The mechanism also prevents unauthorized operation of the engine by circumventing the ignition switch, since once the engine is started in this manner the valve 18 will close.
