The device (10) has a dataset generating unit (20) comprising a manually operated input box, and a message buffer (24) attached to the generating unit, where a dataset is stored in the buffer before storing into an operating program in a program memory (12). A convention testing unit (30) is provided for testing the dataset for observing geometrical and/or mathematical convention and generating test response, where transfer of the dataset to the program memory is performed when the test response is positive. An independent claim is also included for a method for generating an operating program for a machine tool. |
