The invention relates to a compound comprising: amorphous carbon, anthracite or coke of the highest possible purity; silicon carbide, ferro-silicon or calcium-silicon; aluminium slag; aluminium; binder; halides of alkaline metals and alkaline earths; quicklime or hydrated lime; oxide of alkaline metals and alkaline earths; iron; and combustible organic compounds. The compound can be used in the production of steel and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals, in processes involving melting, deoxidation, desulphurisation and refining using an AC or DC electric arc furnace, an induction furnace, an oxygen converter, a ladle furnace, a vacuum degassing furnace, an argon oxygen decarburizer, a plasma furnace and an electroslag refining (ESR) process. The compound performs the following functions: deoxidation of the bath; acceleration of the melting process; alteration of the slag, rendering same more fluid and reactive by increasing the degree of ionisation thereof, thereby enabling the movement of the gases trapped by the liquid bath; ionisation of the space between the tip of the electrode and the metal, stabilising the electric arc and accelerating the heat transfer process; and, finally, addition of heat energy to the system. All of this is obtained owing the content thereof, comprising: Si, Al, C, Ca, Mg, Fe, Na, halogens and transition metals, all of which generate the above-mentioned phenomena. |
