PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reducing the side effects of a bronchial asthma remedy or the like containing a xanthine derivative or its salt as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: The development of side effects can be controlled by maintaining a xanthine derivative or its salt in blood in low concentration and simultaneously reinforcing a sufficient pharmacological action with a phenylpropene derivative such as cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid or cinnamyl acetate. The phenylpropene derivatives such as the cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid and cinnamyl acetate are useful as an agent for reinforcing the action of the xanthine-based medicine containing the xanthine derivative or its salt as an agent for reducing the side effects of the xanthine-based medicine.
