PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a double feed detecting method capable of accurately determining double feeding according to a thickness detection value of a check, even if the maximum thickness of the check to be carried is not less than double as thick as the minimum thickness; and a paper processing device. SOLUTION: The double feed system 1 has a thickness detector 3 detecting the thickness of the check 4 carried in a carrying passage 101 of a check reading device 100, and the thickness of the passing check 4 is sampled from the thickness detector 3 in a fixed period. Change amountΔt of the sampled detection thickness is successively calculated, and the calculated change amountΔt of the sampled detection thickness is compared with a predetermined threshold value Th2. When the change amountΔt is not less than the threshold value Th2, the check 4 is determined double-fed. In order to prevent the degradation in determination accuracy due to error components of the detection value, detection values are successively extracted by plural pieces in a sampling order, and an average value of them is calculated, and then double feed determination is carried out according to the calculated change amount of each average value.
