PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small refractometer capable of measuring by being inserted in a liquid sample and of measuring by bringing a prism into contact with a cutting surface of a fruit. SOLUTION: The refractometer includes: a hollow casing at one edge of which a liquid immersion part having an opening is disposed; a substrate disposed in the hollow part of the casing; a light source supported by the substrate; a light receiving sensor supported by the substrate; a first face disposed facing the light source and the light receiving sensor; a second face disposed at an opening and forming a boundary surface to the liquid sample by contacting with the liquid sample; and a prism having a third face that totally reflects the light emitted from the light source and reflected at the boundary, forming an image on the light receiving face of the light receiving sensor; a calculation unit connected to the light receiving sensor and determining a refractive index on the basis of the output from the light receiving sensor.
