The engine has charge-cycle valves (10, 12) such as inlet valves and outlet valves, attached to each working cylinder. Camshafts (14, 16) are operated by respective rocker arms (20, 24) of the respective charge-cycle valves. The arm (20) of the valve (10) is arranged so that the arm (20) additionally operates the charge-cycle valve (12). The arms are arranged so that a cross-section of a valve stem (37) partially overlaps the charge-cycle valve (12). The arm (24) of the valve (12) is arranged so that arm (24) additionally operates the charge-cycle valve (10).
