A device of driving a backlight unit and a driving method thereof are provided to generate a tube current higher than rating, thereby improving image quality by the increase of a contrast ratio. A lamp controller(11) generates a PWM signal and supplies the PWM signal to a switch unit(15). The switch unit supplies an output voltage having an opposite direction to a transformer(17) alternatively. The transformer boosts an output voltage supplied to the switch unit by a predetermined multiple and supplies the boosted output voltage to a lamp(19). The lamp is driven with a driving voltage so that the tube current flows inside the lamp. The lamp emits light of brightness corresponding to the tube current. |
