An apparatus for detecting and driving a CPU cooling fan and a control method thereof are provided promptly to use a bios code, which is prepared at a system, without modifying the code by automatically sensing a CPU cooling fan even when the type of a CPU cooling fan is changed. A CPU(Central Processing Unit) cooling fan(100) maintains the temperature of the CPU uniformly, and an RPM(Revolutions Per Minute) extracting unit(220) extracts an RPM value of the CPU cooling fane when the CPU cooling fane is driven by receiving a reference duty cycle. A detecting unit(310) detects the types of CPU cooling fans based on the extracted PRM value, and a storage unit(300) stores an information table regarding PRM to duty cycle for each type of CPU cooling fane. A controller(320) drives the CPU cooling fane at a relevant rotation speed, and a PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) generating unit(210) applies a PWM signal to the CPU cooling fan by the controller. A cycle providing unit(200) provides a duty cycle of a certain ration as the precondition for detecting the types of CPU cooling fans.
