The method involves rolling contour of the transition with the rolling tools (3) from an average diameter in a section of the work piece (1) to the mean diameter in the adjacent section by coordinated control of radial infeed of the rolling tools. The axial feed and a mandrel head are arranged under the rolling tools with an outer diameter determined on the smallest inner diameter of both the sections. An independent claim is included for device for transverse rolling of gradated hollow shafts or cylindrical hollow units.
