摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine which controls bias in flame caused by a vertical-type swirling current in a combustion space in a cylinder. SOLUTION: A vertical-type swirling current is formed in the combustion space in the cylinder of the internal combustion engine. The ignition-plug opposite point OP is a point which is opposite an ignition plug 106 provided in the midsection of a ceiling part 101a in the cylinder. The internal combustion engine is provided with a flow-direction turnaround surface 13 which is provided at the piston top 10a closer to the intake side than the ignition-plug opposite point OP. The flow-direction turnaround surface 13 is formed at the piston top 10a in the direction with an angle with respect to a flow-direction imaginary line PL which connects a piston-top part NP closest to the exhaust side of the piston top 10a and a piston-top part SP closest to the intake side of the piston top 10a. The piston-top part NP closest to the exhaust side is a point which is closest to the exhaust side of the piston top 10a, and the piston-top part SP closest to the intake side is a point which is closest to the intake side of the piston top 10a. Then the flow-direction turnaround surface 13 turns the flow direction of the vertical-type swirling current at the piston top 10a to the direction which separates from the imaginary line PL at the piston top 10a.
