<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quartz-based multi-core optical fiber and a method for manufacturing the same enhancing the accuracy of fluorescent diagnostics, and also to provide a quartz-based single-core optical fiber having an improved S-N ratio in fluorescent detection and a method for manufacturing the same, in emission detection and spectroscopic analysis from a tissue to be observed. <P>SOLUTION: The quartz-based single-core optical fiber has a Ge concentration of≥15 wt.% and an F concentration of 0.05-2 wt.% in the core and suppresses emission of light at a wavelength of 600-800 nm when excitation light having a wavelength of 400-650 nm is made incident. The method for manufacturing the same is also provided. Or, the quartz-based multi-core optical fiber includes a plurality of cores comprising GeO<SB>2</SB>-SiO<SB>2</SB>glass having a Ge concentration of≥15 wt.% and an F concentration of 0.05-2 wt.%, wherein the specific refractive index difference between a clad and the cores is≥3% and a clad to core diameter ratio (clad/core) is 1.02-3.0. The quartz-based multi-core optical fiber suppresses emission of light at a wavelength of 600-800 nm when excitation light having a wavelength of 400-650 nm is made incident.
