<p>A petroleum fraction having a Conradson Carbon Residue of at least 1% by wt. is contacted at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of H2 with a supported catalyst comprising a Group VI metal cpd. and an iron group metal cpd., the catalyst having a surface area of at least 250 m2/g, a pore volume of at least 0.6cc/g and a SiO2 content of at least 2% by wt. Preferred catalysts are compounds of Ni and Mo, Co and Mo, or Ni and W on a support of SiO2 and Al2O3. Reaction conditions : 600-900 degrees F, 500-3000 psig. Particularly applicable to heavy feedstocks e.g. crude and residual oils containing at least 50 ppm metals by weight.</p> |
