The transmission has a torque transmitting mechanism i.e. clutch (26), selectively engaged with other torque transmitting mechanisms e.g. brakes (28-34), to interconnect one of the sun gears (14A-20A), planet gear carriers (14B-20B) and ring gears (14C-20C) of a set of planetary gear sets (14-20) with other one of the sun gears, carriers, ring gears and a stationary element i.e. transmission housing (50). Two of the transmitting mechanisms are selectively engaged to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between an input shaft (12) and an output shaft (22).
