The invention relates to an in vitro method for the quantification of oxidative/nitrosative/nitrative stress and/or for the selection of compounds with antioxidant activity. More specifically, the invention relates to an in vitro method for estimating the concentration of nitrogen and/or oxygen reactive species or the precursors thereof and/or for selecting compounds or molecules capable of inhibiting the activity of said reactive species. The invention is characterised in that samples containing, or capable of generating, nitrogen and/or oxygen reactive species are brought into contact in a reaction medium with at least one recombinant SOD enzyme and subsequently the activity of said enzyme and/or the appearance of the oxidatively modified form thereof are measured.
