1,224,718. Separation of neptunium. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 23 Feb., 1970 [11 March, 1969], No. 8524/70. Heading G6R. Neptunium is removed from uranium hexafluoride derived from the processing of spent nuclear reactor fuels. The uranium hexafluoride, containing neptunium hexafluoride, is passed through a bed of cobaltous fluoride pellets at a temperature of 220‹ to 440‹ F., where the neptunium hexafluoride is reduced to non-volatile neptunium tetrafluoride. The neptunium is removed from the cobaltous fluoride bed by the passage of fluorine gas through the bed at 500‹ to 700‹ F. to reconvert the neptunium to gaseous neptunium hexafluoride. |
