A portable control device 20, 120 for selectively locking and unlocking at least one door of a motor vehicle 10 is disclosed in which the device includes a display 23, 123 used to display the time that has elapsed since the motor vehicle was locked. To save cost and reduce complexity, the portable control device contains no means to receive signals from the motor vehicle, but only transmitting means 27 to send lock and unlock signals to the motor vehicle when lock and unlock buttons 22, 122 and 21, 121 are pressed by an operator. Pressing the lock button 22, 122 is used to start a timer used to count the time that has elapsed since the button was pressed, and pressing an unlock button 21, 121 is used to stop the timer. A simple and cost effective method of indicating to an operator that they have pressed the lock button is therefore provided. |
