PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a text direction-determining method which determines a text direction even if a processing load and a memory capacity are decreased, and also provide a system therefor. SOLUTION: The text direction-determining system 200 is provided with; a text line direction-determining part 210 which determines the first text line direction of a first text line which includes a plurality of first text characters in a digital image; a characteristic quantity-computing module 212 which computes first arrangement characteristic quantity and second arrangement characteristic quantity which relate to the first text line direction; and a text direction-determining module 216 which determines the text direction of the plurality of the first text characters in the digital image on the basis of a first value of the first arrangement characteristic quantity and a first value of the second arrangement characteristic quantity.
