PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drainage pump device capable of securing a predetermined drainage flow rate while avoiding an overloaded state of the drainage pump and operating at the original drainage flow rate of the drainage pump in the case where foreign matter tangled in the drainage pump breaks away, and an operating method of the drainage pump. SOLUTION: The drainage pump device is equipped with a motor for driving the drainage pump, a rotational speed control part for controlling the motor to a predetermined rotational speed, and a load detecting part for detecting the driving load of the motor. The rotational speed control part controls to reduce the rotational speed of the motor from the predetermined rotational speed when a load value detected by the load detecting part exceeds a limit load value, and controls to raise the rotational speed of the motor to the predetermined rotational speed when the load value is reduced to less than the predetermined load value lower than the limit load value.
